Hot Tubs 101: The Basics of Owning a Hot Tub

Owning a hot tub is fun but it can take some work learning all the ins and outs of hot tub care. Taking care of your hot tub will ensure many years of use, but many people new to their hot tub aren’t sure what steps to take.

How to Care for Your Hot Tub

Here are some basic tips to get you started and help you keep your hot tub in tip-top shape:

Spa Chemicals

All spas will require chemicals. Just know it’s an easy process with a hot tub from Carefree Spas. Take a minute to learn from us, and you can find the process as easy as 1, 2, 3. We’ll help!

Set the Temperature

You can set the temperature of your hot tub to anything you want! Most come programmed to heat to 100F to start. Adjust the temperature by one to two degrees until you find a temperature that you like. If you have children that will be getting in the hot tub, you want to keep the temperature under 100F for safety.

Invest in a Cover

When you aren’t using your hot tub, you want to keep your cover closed. Keeping the cover closed:

· Insulates the water and increases efficiency
· Keeps dirt, debris, and leaves out of the water, keeping it cleaner
· Block UV rays from the sun that can break down the chemicals in the water creating a breeding ground for bacteria.

A UV protector can help keep your cover from damage and break down from the sun.

Lock the cover when the hot tub is not in use. Not only does this keep the cover secure and help with insulation, but it also helps keep children and animals out of the hot tub.

Filters

Filters should be cleaned about every 4-8 weeks and soaked at least 2 times per year in a filter cleaner for deep cleaning.

Change the Water

Hot tubs lose water over time due to evaporation. To keep the hot tub running correctly, you should add water when you notice it is low. Even with the right amount of chemicals, your hot tub needs to be drained, cleaned, and refilled a couple of times a year. Professional water testing can help you determine when this is needed.
